She was referring to an entry he made in his journal, part 3, My Palm Springs Years. Here's his entry.
Palm Springs, at that time, was a favorite playground for Hollywood stars. . . .My big thrill was when we were stuck in traffic on the main drive and there was a whole group of people crowding around the corner on the sidewalk when Shirley Temple crossed the street with her mother and she came right by our car, and because we were stuck a little in the crosswalk, she touched our car! What a thrill for me. She truly was not just mine, but America's sweetheart at that time.
Here she is "touching" another car.
Not quite the same as Dad's but
close!
Not only was Shirley Temple a movie star (she was the number one box office draw for four years in a row) and an AMAZING dancer here's some of the things she did throughout her life time.
After leaving Hollywood she became involved in politics and public service. She was appointed a delegate to the United Nations in 1969.
U.S. ambassador to Ghana in 1976
and to Czechoslovakia in 1989.
She was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient in 1998 and was included on the American Film Institute's list of the 50 Greatest Screen Legends.
