AND THE ZION TRIP CONTINUES . . .

(Be sure and read Ken's "comments" at the bottom of day one. Delightful.)

There's a Christmas card shot!

Ken wrote:  I can tell you that JP was quite the wanderer. You have to really concentrate on him because there are a lot of cliffs even on the easier hikes. I guess he takes after his father (amen to that:cja) in that sense. He almost has a mischievious side to his efforts. In any case, it took a toll on his parents, but we survived. (as did we. cja)

  1. It was a great trip as testified by those great pictures! However I think the top picture is one for a super Christmas Letter or card.
    Love always,

  2. I'd have to agree since Mom cleaned it up. I think you should send that back to me all spruced up like it is.

  3. Day 2 was a lot of fun. It was a quick trip, but we wanted to have fun together. We got up early because we wanted the worm and the crowds are small in the morning on the hikes. Everyone pitched in and we were out by 8:30. We left our spacious motel and drove to the Zion Visitor Center where we caught a bus after buying Nathan a jacket. The temperature in April in Utah goes up and down 30 degrees it seems every 20 minutes.

We decided to hike Kayenta (shout out) trail to the emerald pools. I'd taken this route once on a frantic search for Davis a few years back when we thought he took the wrong path. It is a lovely trail. We took it all the way to Emerald Pools (upper) where we found the pools slightly less than Emerald (requires the algae apparently). But it was fun. We were scaling rocks when JP declared that he needed to go as in "go." So he and I hustled our way back down and the family joined up with us later. I love Zion Lodge and not just because it serves unlimited Diet Coke for a reasonable fee. We joined up and then eventually took the tram back to the Visitor Center. We picked up our car and then went up canyon through the tunnels and then did the Overlook. I enjoy this hike as well since the payoff is fun.

There is a bit of a nerve-wracking element to it, however, since small children fail to appreciate the 300 foot drop offs and brother tend to strong arm them a bit if they venture on their own, which they're prone to do. You'll notice that Sophie isn't the happiest of campers (and we didn't even camp) in the picture. But Steven was concerned about her life. In any case, it was a lovely hike.

We finished it by driving the back side of Highway 89 for awhile and eventually making our way home. A lovely trip and probably the last for our entire family for awhile. I'm thinking a couple of years at least.
